The cabin

Built between the world wars, Barton Hurdle has been providing a summer haven in this wild coastal hinterland for nearly 100 years. Come to disconnect, to reset and to recharge.

Perfect for friends, for couples and for families who like stargazing by the sea. Barton Hurdle sits in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is just a ten minute stroll from a wild and breathtaking beach and the South West Coast Path.

Providing a space to regroup and relax, our beautiful and authentically restored cabin feels like home from the moment you arrive. We have a wood burner, a well kitted out kitchen, a wonderfully powerful shower, a piano and a whole load of books and board games to work your way through.

Up to four people can sleep soundly here in one double and one twin room. Dogs are welcome to come along too.

When you’re not chilling out reading a book, or wandering the beautiful lanes around Barton Hurdle, there are lots of great places to visit locally.

Welcombe Mouth Beach

On one of the most remote stretches of the South West coast path, Welcombe Mouth is a breathtaking beach and just a ten minute stroll from Barton Hurdle. Best seen at low tide – it's mainly pebbly, with some sand and striking rock formations. This is a quiet beach, which allows dogs all year round. It's perfect for watching sunsets over the roaring Atlantic. This is not a lifeguarded beach.

Welcombe Pottery

Just a 15 minute wander from Barton Hurdle, Welcombe Pottery sits next door to the Old Smithy Inn – so we recommend visiting both and having a pint and a look at David & Alice's beautiful ceramics and glass. The pottery has been open for over 50 years and David and Alice have run it for over twenty years of those. They also run a programme of workshops from their new studio space too.

The Old Smithy

Only a 15 minute stroll up through the valley to this beautiful pub. We love their Sunday lunches and their lovely beer garden. There is always something going on here…from live music to quiz nights. Booking a table is always advisable, especially if you plan to eat here. We love being able to walk to it from Barton Hurdle but do remember your torch if you're wandering home after dark!

Bude Sea Pool

Bude is the nearest town to Barton Hurdle, and it takes about 25 minutes to get there by car. The 1930s tidal pool is our favourite thing about living in Bude. It's free to swim there all year round is a must-visit for all keen swimmers. There is a shallow area for little ones and a vast 90 metre stretch of water for the more adventurous swimmers. Beach huts are available to hire at the pool and we encourage all our visitors to make a donation if they can to this wonderful, charity run amenity.

Hartland Quay

20 minutes in the car from Barton Hurdle, this place is truly breathtaking. With its own beach (no dogs allowed onto the beach unfortunately), a wonderful little pub (The Wreckers) and even a museum, all about ship wrecks, Hartland Quay is an unmissable place to visit.

Marsland Mouth and Nature Reserve

A short walk from Barton Hurdle, Marsland Valley is situated in two large valleys which straddle the Devon-Cornwall border. It is a designated nature reserve with a magical, secretive mix of woodland, coastline and butterfly-filled meadows

We loved the nearby beach and exploring the local area, but always found ourselves drawn back to the cottage and the lush gardens. What an amazing place this is, it felt like coming home. It has everything you need and more. The cottage offers so much privacy, the garden is beautiful and the beach is just a 10 min walk down the path. Lovely pub and farm shop nearby. We were sad to leave after a week and we definitely hope to come back another time.

This was my second time at Barton Hurdle and it was just as magical as the first. The cabin is a cosy home from home with everything you need for a relaxing stay. The sea is just at the end of the lane and a short walk brings you to the fab Old Smithy Inn which does delicious food.

Definitely one of the more unique places I've stayed via Airbnb. Truly idyllic and peacful location tucked away in a valley just 10min walk from Welcombe Mouth which is a rocky, shingle beach. If you like tranquil retreats, there aren't many much better than this this.
